New England Garden Designers Take High Tea With Hartley At The British Consulate

Over 70 of New England’s leading landscape architects and garden designers will be the guests of Dr Phil Budden, the UK’s Consul General to New England on September 27 when the British Consulate Boston, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, hosts a horticultural high tea featuring talks by Johnny Mobasher, managing director of Hartley Botanic and international garden historian, writer and lecturer, Ethne Clarke.

Johnny Mobasher will trace the role of the glasshouse in garden landscapes, illustrating his talk with examples of large and small estate structures which have been commissioned by landowners, institutions and garden designers across the British Isles over the last century – and which are now much in demand across the Atlantic.

No doubt some of the guests will be descended from the English Pilgrims who first colonised the region in 1620 and greatly influenced the landscape of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.

Co-speaker, Ethne Clarke is a native of Chicago but established her garden writing career during 30 years in England, where she is a member of the Institute of Horticulture and has authored 20 best-selling books including English Country Gardens and the literary-award-winning Art of the Kitchen Garden.

She sits on the board of several garden conservation foundations and is editor-in-chief of the US magazine, Organic Gardening.
